7 Frequently Asked Questions

To install SailEver on your Garmin watch, start by visiting the Garmin Connect IQ Store either through the Connect IQ app on your smartphone or directly at apps.garmin.com. Search for "SailEver" and select it from the results.

Once on the SailEver page, click "Download" and select your compatible device from the dropdown menu. The datafield will automatically sync to your watch the next time you connect it to your phone via Bluetooth or to your computer via USB.

To add SailEver to your activity, open the sailing activity on your watch, press and hold the menu button, select "Activity Settings," then "Data Screens," and choose which screen you want to customize. Select the layout that shows a single field, and scroll through the available datafields until you find SailEver. Once selected, it will display all 13 sailing metrics on your screen during your sailing activities.

SailEver was intentionally designed as a datafield rather than a standalone app to provide maximum flexibility for sailors with different needs. As a datafield, SailEver can be integrated into your existing activity profiles alongside other datafields that matter to you.

This approach allows cruisers to combine SailEver with tide information, sunset times, and navigation data on separate screens, while racers and dinghy sailors can pair it with tactical information, wind shifts, and starting timers. Each sailor has unique requirements, and the datafield format ensures you can customize your watch experience without compromising on the comprehensive sailing data SailEver provides.

Additionally, datafields typically consume less battery power than full applications, extending your watch's battery life during longer sailing sessions—a crucial consideration when you're out on the water all day.

SailEver uses a sophisticated Savitzky-Golay filter to calculate your Course over Ground (CoG), providing a smoother and more accurate representation of your actual sailing direction compared to raw GPS data.

Raw GPS positions naturally contain small errors and fluctuations that can make your course appear erratic, especially at lower speeds or in areas with reduced GPS accuracy. The Savitzky-Golay filter applies a mathematical smoothing algorithm that preserves the shape and trends of your actual course while eliminating the noise and jitter from the GPS signal.

This advanced filtering is particularly valuable when sailing close to the wind or during subtle course adjustments, as it prevents the constant small fluctuations that would otherwise make it difficult to maintain a consistent heading. The result is a stable CoG reading that reflects your true sailing direction without the distracting variations of unfiltered GPS data.

The Tack/Jibe indicator in SailEver automatically detects significant changes in your sailing direction and displays the angle of your maneuver for 30 seconds after completion.

The system continuously monitors your Course over Ground and when it detects a turn of more than 30 degrees, it compares your current course with your course from 30 seconds ago to calculate the exact angle of your tack or jibe. This information is particularly valuable for analyzing your sailing performance and improving your technique.

The indicator remains visible for a maximum of 30 seconds after the maneuver is completed, giving you time to note the angle without permanently cluttering your display. This temporary display ensures you have the information when it's most relevant while maintaining a clean interface during regular sailing.

The Barometer trend feature in SailEver provides crucial weather prediction information by monitoring changes in atmospheric pressure over the past hour.

SailEver analyzes barometric pressure readings (measured in hPa) collected throughout the previous 60 minutes and displays both the current pressure and the trend direction. When pressure consistently rises or falls during this period, the display shows a red arrow pointing up or down, indicating a strong trend that may signal significant weather changes approaching.

For more subtle pressure changes, where the majority but not all measurements show an increase or decrease, SailEver displays an orange arrow, suggesting a developing trend that warrants attention but may not indicate immediate weather shifts. This early warning system helps sailors anticipate changing conditions and make informed decisions about their sailing plans.

The Speed Chart in SailEver provides a visual representation of your sailing speed over the past 2 minutes, allowing you to analyze short-term performance trends at a glance.

Rather than using fixed minimum and maximum values, the chart employs a relative scaling system that automatically adjusts based on your recent speed range. This adaptive approach ensures optimal visibility of speed changes regardless of whether you're sailing at 3 knots or 15 knots, making subtle variations equally apparent across all speed ranges.

The chart updates in real-time as you sail, providing immediate feedback on how sail adjustments, heading changes, or wind shifts affect your performance. This visual feedback is invaluable for technique refinement and helps you quickly identify the optimal trim and angle for maximum speed in current conditions.

SailEver is currently in Beta as we continue to refine the experience based on real-world testing and user feedback. This Beta phase allows us to optimize performance across different Garmin devices and sailing conditions while ensuring reliability in various environments.

While in Beta, we're focused on perfecting the core functionality and addressing any issues that arise. We don't currently have plans to introduce a paid version with additional features—our goal is to create the most comprehensive single-screen sailing datafield available for Garmin watches.

SailEver will remain free for all users, with regular updates and improvements based on community feedback. We're committed to supporting the sailing community with this tool and encourage users to share their experiences to help us make SailEver even better.

About SailEver

As a passionate sailor for over 10 years, I've relied on my Garmin Fenix watches through countless nautical adventures. Despite their capabilities, I always found myself switching between screens to access all the sailing data I needed in real-time. When life recently offered me a chance to slow down, I decided to create what I and fellow sailors have been missing: a single, comprehensive datafield displaying all essential sailing metrics at once. SailEver is the result—born from a sailor's needs and designed for sailors everywhere. I'm excited to share it with the community and look forward to your feedback as we continue to refine this sailing companion together.
